Let’s start here. Warren Buffett. Warren owns Berkshire Hathaway, Berkshire Hathaway owns Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance, and Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance owns us. Warren Buffett is probably never going to write for us, but he’s always welcome to. More importantly, his philosophy toward business and life lets us do what we do best – give you great products to buy and great stuff to read.
John Noel won’t say he invented modern travel insurance, so we’ll say this: John Noel practically invented modern travel insurance. But that’s not all. He and his wife, Patty, are incredible people who have donated millions to make this a better world to travel in, and that covers everywhere from Stevens Point to West Africa. He lives his life according to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and runs his company the same way. John gives us the latitude to be who we are. He is the No. 1 reason we are here today doing what we’re doing.
Brad Rutta runs our marketing team. Brad and I (and you’ll find out about me a little later) have worked together for more than a decade, even extending outside of our jobs to do a fantasy-football podcast for a year and a half. (I won’t tell you where you can find it, but it’s out there if you dig a little.) In his spare time – which he has precious little of – he’s a successful high-school basketball coach. Much of the cool stuff you see on our site and in our app is a direct result of his tenacity and vision.
On the other hand, a lot of the cool looks you see around the site are Becky Swan’s work. She’s our Swiss Army Knife. She’s an extremely talented web designer, graphic designer, and writer, not to mention an occasional ski bum and the owner of Bailey, the department’s border collie (and arguably the smartest creature in the entire unit). If Becky can’t do it, or make it look better, then it probably can’t be done.
Holding down the social-media platform is Lisa Bellavin, our in-house social guru. Lisa’s upbeat and smart and lots of fun to be around, which is what you want your social guru to be. I mean, who wants to read tweets and Facebook posts from a downer – even an entertaining downer? Lisa also has great writing chops – and speaking of chops, she’s also the owner of Pippa, the equally upbeat and energetic pitbull.
And then there’s me – Kit Kiefer. It freaks me out to think that I’ve been a writer and editor for 30 years, but there’s not much I can do about it now. I got my start in college by winning the Datsun National Student Writing Contest, which tells you that I’m so old that Nissan wasn’t even called Nissan when I was in college. I’ve written a few books, edited some magazines, written some blogs – the usual stuff for a writer. I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing talents over the years … and the run continues.
We also have a lot of great creative talents that will be supplying all sorts of creative stuff to the BHTP site. We’ll introduce you to them in the coming months. But in the meantime, watch this space. We’ve got some great stuff coming.
